Meine Browser Konfiguration

Screencastify – Screen Video Recorder

This might suck, but I think it was needed...

Before I launched a #Friendica #server, I looked for a #demo on the system to see if I would like it better than Diaspora or other options. I couldn't find such a video so today I finally made my own. I know I have technical issues and it was an unplanned wandering through, but hopefully, I get others to make better ones.

#podmin #outage #pod dapor net #performance #diaspora #hubzilla #friendica

there will be a short outage - sorry for the short notice - please be patient

As you can check, I'm on #Friendica (#Libranet.de) and I can tag all my comments as you see

This is the good aspect of #Friendica, I like to communicate with people of other #platforms. It lacks of a good mobile app, now I'm using #Fedilab, wonderful with #Mastodon but very limited with Friendica.

Friendica benefits

I appreciate how Friendica emphasizes the federation aspect of the Fediverse.

I love Mastodon, both its design & communities, but it tends to focus your attention to conversations in the Mastodon platform. Now part of the reason is that Mastodon is one of the larger parts of the Fediverse. But I also think it has to do with platform design.

Friendica allows you to see across many different software platforms. I see Mastodon. I see diaspora*. I see Hubzilla. I see others too. The platform really gives you access to so many different kinds of conversations.

#Friendica #Fediverse #platform-shenanigans

Glad it makes things clearer to you. many newcomers in d* (like me 6 months ago) don't realize the implication of the protocols in the communication.
Not my diagram though, I found it somewhere in the help file of #Friendica.

Which server should an new #Fediverse user choose?

Eugen, the creator of Mastodon and admin of the biggest Mastodon server, mastodon.social, talks about the challenges new users might face when they want to register a Mastodon account. In fact these problems aren't limited to Mastodon.

Every user planning to create an account somewhere in the #Fediverse has to make several decisions first:

    1. Which platform?

Do I want to settle on #Mastodon, #Diaspora, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #Pleroma, #Socialhome or one of the more specialised choices? Given that most of these platforms differ in features, chances are high that I can make a choice based on technical facts. Maybe I already know some accounts I want to follow, which might narrow down the list of choices since not all networks are connected (most notably Mastodon and Diaspory can't see each other, so I can either use the one I need or one of the multi-protocol platforms). Even if I can't decide yet, I'll just register one account for every platform.

    2. Which server?

Now this might be the harder question. Let's assume I picked a platform and now want to register my account. Which server should I chose and why? For some platforms there are servers that are specialised on single topics, so if, for example, I am an English speaking Open Source evangelist and want to use Mastodon, there is a server that is just right for me.

But what If I have several main interests? There is no special community for people who like knitting and fishing. Or, more likely, what if I can't even decide on my interests right now? See, I'm interested in many things, nothing special though, just want to talk about things. Where should I register?

Of course there are many servers in every network that aren't limited to any set of topics. So I'll just choose the one that most other people already chose, right?

Well, nearly. And that's exactly Eugen's problem here. As a user, you want to use a server that

    - is well maintained and is here to stay.
    - has some more users so its public timeline isn't empty.

But from a technical view it would be great if users would spread equally over all servers. So I'll just choose the one that has the least users, right?

Well, nearly. Maybe a compromise is the way to go. It could look like this:

    - Look for a server with more than one user.
    - See if it exists for more than, say, three months.
    - Look up the admins, see what they post, ask yourself if you like them.
    - Have a look at the server's public timeline.

These tools might help answering a newcomer's questions:

But the main question stays: how do you explain this to a passer-by who just wants to quickly create a Fediverse account? Could a landing page featuring a "I'm feeling lucky" button that will automatically pick a random server help?

Please share your thoughts: Cleanup friendica header structure

    !Friendica Support
I would like to gather some feedback on a #design proposal to cleanup #friendica headers. If this is the wrong forum please hint me in the correct direction, but as both developers and users read the support forum I think it's a good fit.

Below find two images a) currently b) proposal.

    Things to think about:

    1. let's get rid of the secondary header menu: I think two header menubars are confusing, overwhelming for new users, uncommon on other social networks (for obvious reasons) and provide littele benefit on the pro side of things.
1.1 new post could move to the left column, text should be added and the button increased - it's the most important function of a social network after all, right?
1.2 sorting: currently Commented Order, Posted Order, Personal, Starred are shown. I don't think it's a common use case to switch between those a lot. depending on what the consensus is here those options could a) be moved to the settings or b) added to the top menu as dropdown to save space and have less user facing options.
1.3 I know forums are displayed in the secondary header, that info could also be moved to the left column where it would fit quite nicely
    2. comparing the design, note how much cleaner the overall layout appears. that has partly to do with the fact that the secondary header menu is poorly layouted and sticks out like a wrong UI element, this is solved by removing the second menubar.

What are your thoughts on this?

Dear @Paul Sutton , @Tobias , and all the others around. I've sent the following text and link to the newhere I follow in the languages I use (EN, FR, ES, IT):
    ==========
Welcome to you and greetings from #Friendica in the Fediverse. If you're interested you may find very basic information about decentralised social network HERE
    ==============
The few feedback I got, tell me it is useful to them also because it is so easy to access.
I must say that I the ratio new d* vs new Friendica is not in favor of Friendica despite we are a few ones to promote our network in FB and in G+ predominantly.
I don't have a github account and not planning to open one. Maybe because I don't understand it use.

A help for the wave of newcomers to come

    !Friendica Support

    Dear All,
once upon a time I've been a G+ refugee and have been so happy to be kindly welcomed in Friendica and the instance which I now reside.
Yet I spent much time in finding my way and realise after I landed on d* that Friendica was more interesting for me. So I though after @alysonsee (Fca) that putting together a sort of welcome text encompassing some basic jargon would be a good thing.
Here is the text I'm planning to provide to any newcomer I see. Let me know how to improve it keeping in mind the following criteria :
    1. public is non geek lambda user
    2. quick so that the user has the impression he receives the keys in an A4 page max
    3. allow me to favorise #Friendica for its flexibility and connexion with the Free Network.
    ====================
    Decentralised & Free Social Networks

For those who are #newhere from other social networks, here’s a bit of handy vocabulary to help you navigate this new social network universe:

    - Protocol - An agreed format that enables software applications to communicate with (or “federate” with) each other. The two most heavily used protocols around here are Diaspora and ActivityPub. As an end user, you don’t have to care about the protocol you are using and you don’t ever see the “protocol” other than it enables or limits which users you can see.
Nevertheless, be aware that currently not all the platforms (see this word later) are fully compatible and limit you in the possibility of interactions.
    Image/photo

    - Platform - The software application that implements a protocol(s) for federating. The Diaspora platform implements the eponymously named Diaspora protocol. Mastodon, for example, implements the ActivityPub protocol. Friendica implements both the Diaspora and the ActivityPub protocols.

    - Server - pod - instance - node - The server(s) running a particular platform (software application). The variability in naming is due to the various origins of these platforms now working to intercommunicate.
For example, pluspora.com is one of the many pods running the Diaspora platform; mastodon.social is one of the many pods running the Mastodon platform; and libranet.de is one of the many pods running the Friendica platform.

    - The Federation - The collective of servers running platforms that implement the Diaspora protocol. This includes all servers running Diaspora (the software application), Hubzilla, Friendica, or Socialhome. The users on *any* of these pods can connect to and interact with each other.

    - The Fediverse - The collective of servers running platforms that implement the ActivityPub (and OStatus) protocols. This includes all servers running Mastodon, Pixelfed, Hubzilla, Friendica, Socialhome, or many, many others. The users on *any* of these servers can connect to and interact with each other.

    - The Free Network - The collective of pods in The Federation and The Fediverse, combined.

Hope that helps and doesn’t make this seem more complicated than it actually is. The main difference from other social networks is that no single entity owns and runs a platform. On G+ or Facebook, you are locked into that platform/company to talk to other users. In the Free Network, one set of volunteers writes the software and puts it out there for free, and another set of volunteers downloads the software and runs it on their servers and invites us to have user accounts for free. (But you should definitely donate to help them with the costs, if you can.) If we, as users, decide we aren’t happy with our current experience, we can change platforms or pods and still keep all of our friends/connections. On Facebook, G+, Twitter, and the like, you are locked in; and if you want leave, you go cold turkey.

Glad you joined us here in the land of choice.

    !Friendica Support

Tags in WordPress feeds will not be used as tags im #Friendica posts anymore. Why?

@tom79 Well, I can't connect to the #friendica instance using #fedilab. Should this be possible? "Just" trying to add this as a new account didn't work, so far.

#fediverse integration of #friendica surely *does* seem to move on. Now if I only manage to find a meaningful mobile client for that... @Tusky ? @tom79 ? 🙂

G+ style Multi-Column Streams in diaspora, Tumblr, Mastodon, Hubzilla, Friendica, YouMe, and MeWe.

I’ve put together CSS styles which provide multi-column Streams in various social media platforms. This has a huge effect on browsing speed. To use them, you:

    1) Download Stylus plugin (Chrome, Firefox or Opera): https://add0n.com/stylus.html

    2) Install desired Multi-Column style from here: https://userstyles.org/users/773238

    3) Modify the domain it acts on if you're using a different pod

    Enjoy!

    = = = = = ADDITIONAL NOTES = = = = =

diaspora is the most refined, with a lot of extra features like multicolumn comments, autoexpand all posts, font size customization, and other UI enhancements

Tumblr is also solid; it keeps the standard width of Tumblr posts and is responsive to width (2 or 3 columns)

Mastodon is maybe 95% good, depending on how you prefer to use Mastodon.

Hubzilla is maybe 80% good. Because of the right sidebar, this is limited to two columns by default.

Friendica is maybe 60% good. There's some sort of vertical scrolling bug when the left sidebar is too tall. If the left sidebar is short enough to fit on screen, all is good. But if the left sidebar is too tall, then scrolling gets stuck when you're too near the bottom of the content.

YouMe is maybe 40% good. It works, but it also affects single post view. And YouMe itself is really buggy right now (it only just launched). But the good news is that my userstyle can be used to produce single column (it's normally 2 column, which not everybody likes).

MeWe is maybe 50% good. As with Hubzilla, the right sidebar limits available space. So, it only provides 2 columns by default. And due to the complexity of MeWe, it only applies to the home and Groups pages - so, only single column view if you go to a single group. But as far as I've noticed, it's not buggy.

Of these platforms, the only ones I use significantly are diaspora, Tumblr, and Mastodon. Those will be the best supported, naturally.

    #diaspora #tumblr #mastodon #hubzilla #friendica #youme #mewe #pluspora #tips #tip #diasporatips

    https://github.com/produnis/pic2fediverse

    https://github.com/produnis/fefebot

    :)

Question about Twitter Connector: I replied on this post:
    https://squeet.me/display/962c3e10-105c-8626-fa35-96b176118741
Friendica post got mirrored to Twitter here:
    https://twitter.com/MannheimBeauty/status/1105034322443153408
Following the link in the Tweet back to Friendica throws a 404 when opening link and not being logged into friendica. This is reproducible.

To me this feels like a bug, as the friendica post is public and to my knowledge unrestricted. Does anybody have an idea, why this is not working? Is it a known problem?

Way to go, #Fediverse. Let's get it on!

Oh dear #Fediverse , today I saw people complaining that a service is using #Mastodon instead of #Friendica or #Pleroma or $whatever , because that's way better.

And this is why #Linux or #XMPP or $FLOSS never succeeded, because we don't even like our own kind.

    Donate to Friendica dev

    !Friendica Support

I'm getting some digital errands done today, and I'm long overdue in donating to the #Friendica development cause. However, I looked around the friendi.ca site and don't see any info on how to do so: https://friendi.ca/?s=donate

    Do y'all accept donations?

    I released the version 1.76.0 #Fedilab

    What's new:

    - Featured hashtags for profiles (Mastodon)
    - Private timeline with conversations for #Friendica
    - Improve the import/export feature
    - Improve the custom sharing feature
    - Friendica: Replace favourites with likes
    - Fix a crash when mentioning a message

    Don't hesitate to submit your #Peertube, #Pleroma, #Mastodon, #Pixelfed, #Friendica instances with tags to @fedvice

The more instances it will know, better will be its suggestions

It understands some words. You can ping it with "help" for more info

The idea is to use it with #Fedilab for suggesting instances with the follow instances feature

    Results are ordered with matches

The source code is here https://gitlab.com/tom79/fedvice

Thanks for sharing or submitting your ideas

    (english/deutsch)
Help wanted / Bitte um Hilfe

(english) I try to create an overview of the features of the different federated platforms and which communication protocols they are capable of. Or add another platform (with sources) that can "speak" the communication protocol that is mentioned on the sheet. Once it's finished it will be available for everybody. https://github.com/hoergen/besser-der-podcast/tree/master/fediverse

How do I upload a video to #Friendica? Shouldn't it be possible the same way as it can be done with photos?
